Well, I certainly learned one thing this past weekend. Orienteering solo is a whole new ball game from working with a team. With Brian in Australia, Tiff still laid up with a bum ankle, and Colin prepping to go to DC, I went to the RMOC orienteering meet in Nederland this weekend solo.
Going for the red course (highest difficulty and longest length), everything was going great for the first 5 points. Looking for CP 6, I got hopelessly off course - (I think my compass is broken, you'd believe me if you saw the way it works) and spent 30 minutes trying to find where I was. Although there were other teams around to ask for help, I wanted to dig myself out alone, and finally found the way. After reaching CP6, I just took it pretty easy, and spent more time trying to discover tricks and just having a good time. All-in-all, finished around 30 minutes back from the other Adventure Racers there, so I know not to get lost next time!
Orienteering meets are great fun, and the people are great. Even with the cold weather and rain (which destroyed my map) it was a blast, and I am hoping to do another this weekend at Kelly Dahl campground again in Nederland. Hope to see you all there!
Remember, when in the woods, stay found...... being lost sucks.
